How to appeal
The EAB can hear appeals against grades only when the entire enquiry and appeals process of the awarding body is complete. (The awarding bodies for GCSE and GCE qualifcations are AQA, CCEA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC.)Only examination centres and private candidates can make enquiries and appeals to the awarding bodies and to the EAB. Candidates entered through centres (normally their school or college) can pursue enquiries about their results (re-marks) only through that centre.
Detailed information and guidance on the awarding bodies' services is set out in the booklet Post results services, issued each year to centres by the GCE and GCSE awarding bodies.
An 'enquiry about results' would normally involve a re-mark or re-moderation by the awarding body. If you are unhappy with the outcome you must lodge an appeal with the awarding body within two weeks of receiving the outcome of your enquiry.
The awarding body will consider all the action taken in your case as the first stage of the appeal and send a report on it to the centre or private candidate making the appeal. The final stage of the awarding body process (stage two) is an appeal hearing before the awarding body's appeals committee.
If you are dissatisfied with the result of your stage two appeal to the awarding body and wish to pursue the matter further, you must lodge an appeal with the EAB within three weeks of receiving the draft report on the outcome from the awarding body.
To appeal to the EAB, contact the Principal Officer Appeals (020 7509 5995) for an application form or click Application Form to download one. The form asks for the details of the examination, candidates and grades involved and a summary of the grounds on which you are making the appeal. (Please note: we cannot receive applications by e-mail; the form must be signed by the appellant (ie head of centre or private candidate) and posted to the EAB.)
The chairman of the EAB will then decide whether the matter falls within the remit of the Board and if there is a case to be heard. You will be told within two weeks if your application has been accepted or not.
If it is accepted, an appeal hearing before an EAB panel will then be arranged.
