Enquiries and appeals process

This is an outline of the arrangements for enquiries about results and appeals against grades that have been introduced from summer 1999 for GCE, GCSE and entry level qualifications.

Enquiries and appeals to awarding bodies

  • The closing date for centres' and private candidates' enquiries about results (re-marks) to awarding bodies is 20 September. (The awarding bodies are AQA, CCEA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC.)

  • Enquirers will be notified of the outcome of priority enquiries within 18 days, and will normally receive the outcome of other enquiries, within 40 days of making an enquiry.

  • If enquirers are dissatisfied with the outcome of a re-mark or re-moderation and wish to appeal against the grades, they must lodge an appeal with the awarding body within two weeks of receiving the outcome of the enquiry.

  • Awarding bodies will complete their appeals process, including a formal appeal hearing, and send a decision letter within 10 weeks of receiving the request to appeal. All appeals on summer examinations will be concluded by 14 February in the following year.

Appeals to the Examinations Appeals Board (the EAB)

  • Centres or private candidates who are dissatisfied with the outcome of an appeal to an awarding body should lodge an appeal with the EAB within three weeks of receiving the draft report on that outcome from the awarding body.

  • For more information on EAB procedures and how to appeal, read Remit and Procedures, How to Appeal or Appeal Hearings: Information and Guidance.

General Information

  • Each awarding body appeals panel will include at least one independent member. A sample of hearings will be monitored by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) and the other regulatory authorities, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning, and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales, and the Northern Ireland Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA).

  • The regulatory authorities will collect and publish data on the time taken to deal with enquiries and appeals, and on grade changes arising from them.

  • Detailed information and guidance on the post-results services available following the AS, A level and GCSE examinations is set out in the booklet Post result services issued each year to centres by the GCE and GCSE awarding Bodies.
